What does “catastrophic” coverage mean?
An ACA Catastrophic health plan is a specific Marketplace insurance category with eligibility restrictions. It generally has lower premiums than some other Marketplace plans, a high deductible, and ACA-required essential health benefits and preventive services. Eligibility rules can change; check current enrollment rules rather than assuming you qualify.
Other products marketed as “catastrophic,” including short-term limited-duration plans, fixed-indemnity products, and health-sharing arrangements, may not provide ACA-compliant comprehensive coverage. They can exclude preexisting conditions, impose benefit caps or leave substantial bills unpaid.
